Vedanta Group Company – Hindustan Zinc, has received “Outstanding Accomplishment Award for Corporate Excellence” in the CII ITC Sustainability Award 2015. The Award function was held in Delhi on 15th December 2015.
The award was presented by Dr. R.A. Mashelkar – Former Jury Chair and President Global Research Alliance and Mr. Shyam Saran- Jury Chair and Chairman of Research & Information System for Developing Countries. On behalf of Hindustan Zinc the Award was received by Mr. Akhilesh Shukla – Head CRDL, Mr. TR Gupta – Head Corporate Affairs (Delhi) and Mr. Prasad Giri – Engineer Environment.
Over 1.4 million saplings have been planted by the Company over the years. As a part of green energy initiatives the company is also one of the largest producers of wind power – 274 MW in India, which is registered under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is entitled for carbon credits.
Hindustan Zinc produces also about 35.4 MW of power through the waste heat recovery process. Utilization of fly-ash and slag, adoption of environment friendly technology, water conservation and setting-up Sewage Treatment Plant in Udaipur are some of the many key initiatives taken by the Company towards care for the environment.
In an effort to reduce consumption of fresh water, Hindustan Zinc has installed reverse osmosis effluent treatment plants (ETPs) at all its smelting locations, resulting in the reduction of its fresh water footprint and the company has also installed adiabatic cooling towers (ACTs) to reduce water wastage, in the form of evaporation losses of almost 80 percent.
