Little did Kanhaiyyalal know that attending a monthly meeting of Hindustan Zinc’s Samadhan Project for agriculture and livestock development, would entirely change his life.
Kanhaiyyalal worked as an artisan in Biliya village of Nagri Panchayat. In 2012, he happened to attend the Samdhan Project meeting and got inspired to start cultivation on a bigger scale on his 4800 square meters of land. He was given 40 lemon plants by the company and he decided to use half of his land for its yield. After 5 years of cultivation, in the second year of production, he sold around 10 quintals of lemon and earned more than Rs. 45,000/-. Since then, his farm has only seen continuous increase in the production resulting in great profits for Kanhaiyyalal. With a strong support of his wife Shyamu, on and off the field, today total of more than 15 quintals of lemon is produced in his field.
Hindustan Zinc, not only provided him with plants but also taught him the latest techniques of farming, methods of maintaining the crops, preparing organic fertilizers, etc. to help in healthier yields.
Kanhaiyyalal has also attended the training workshops held by the company under its ‘exposure visits’. He has so far been to Urlikanchan in Nagpur city of Maharashtra, Anand in Gujrat and Pushkar in Rajasthan for the trainings.
“The innovations in agriculture have helped in increasing my income by 3 folds. I would recommend all the farmers to attend the trainings to understand the latest technologies and various kinds of organic fertilizers that can help in a better and fruitful yield…”, Kanhaiyyalal said blissfully.
“I am grateful to Hindustan Zinc for giving us our source of income…”, smiled Shyamu, standing by his husband with pride.
Apart from the lemon cultivation, with the profits made, Kanhaiyyalal also invested in cultivating mangoes and papayas, which has further increased his income.
The Samadhan Project has been launched to ensure sustainable livelihood through integrated farming system, and livestock development; and through improved farm-based livelihood, Hindustan Zinc had improved Kanhaiyyalal and his family’s way of living…
