Skin-friendly herbal colors manufacturing with the support of Hindustan Zinc &Manjari Foundation
Udaipur: The festival of colors is just around the corner and preparations are in full swing, right from the markets to the common households across the nation. One can find colours in myriad hues, donning shops across various markets. And amid these colours the ones that are sparkling bright, are herbal colours produced by the women of Gurjar Kheda village of Chittorgarh, Rajasthan.

The specialty of these Holi colours is that they are purely organic, natural colours manufactured by a group of village women associated with Sakhiproject run by Hindustan Zinc in collaboration with Manjari Foundation. Having a population of about one thousand, this year Gurjar Khera has turned aromatic, due to these naturally made Holi colours, thereby bringing excitement and enthusiasm among the locals. Reason being the fact that, it is being manufactured by these rural women who have been associated with the Sakhi project for many years now. But for the first time, these natural herbal Holi colours made by them have gone beyond the borders of Chittorgarh to four other districts namely Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Udaipur, and Ajmer.
By making eco-friendly colours for Holi, these women are not only generating employment opportunities for themselves but also promoting the use of eco-friendly, best-in-class colours to the masses to celebrate Holi – one of the main festivals of the nation that is celebrated with great fervor in Rajasthan.
Mosina, a Sakhi member associated with the group informs that these herbal Holi colours are available in four shades – green, pink, red, and yellow. These eco-friendly colours are being prepared by mixing natural colours with corn flour and perfume. The women have been trained to make herbal colours under the Sakhi project.

Sakhi manufactured Herbal Holi colour is available under the name ‘Upaya’
These herbal Holi colours are available under the brand name Upaya Herbal colour manufactured by Sakhi Production Committee and are available in the packaging of 100gm, 200gm and 500 gm. The specialty of these colours is that it is completely skin friendly; these do not give any kind of allergy, burning sensation or the slightest form of skin irritation. Also, these colours can be immediately washed off with water.
10 women manufactured 500kg herbal colour in just three days
Narayani Bai who manufactured these herbal colours this year for the first time says that she is so happy about the effort that she will continue to make them every year now. This particular group of women has Leela, Nirma, Mangi Bai, Sharda, Anu, Kamali, Pani and Krishna as its core team. And each of them earned seven thousand rupees by making herbal Holi colours, which they say has been of great financial support to them.
Sakhi Program is propelling women to venture into small businesses/ SMEs
Maangi Bai, a member of the Sakhi project of Hindustan Zinc, says that before joining this project, most of the women of the village used to either do farming or labor-related works. But now, after gaining new knowledge about other options at work, the women got inspired to think beyond the box and run small industries with the support of the Sakhi group.
A cheerful Kamali Bai says, ‘We had never thought that the colours we used to buy each year to play Holi can be so easily manufactured by us. We didn’t know that we had the talent to manufacture it and thereby add to the family income! Now the women of our village are also manufacturing spices as well as working at Sewing Projects run by the Sakhiproject and are thus becoming more and more self-reliant by becoming the financial pillar of the family.”

Udaipur : Vedanta Nand Ghar, an Anil Agarwal Foundation Initiative, has been awarded the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative under the ‘Indira Mahila Shakti Protsahan Evam Samman Yojana’ by the Rajasthan Government.

As part of the International Women’s day celebrations, the award was given by Honourable Minister of State, Smt. Mamta Bhupesh, Women and Child Development, Govt. of Rajasthan at the Amrita Haat in Jaipur on 14th March 2021, at a state level festival organized by the Department Women and Child Development, Govt of Rajasthan, that aims to promote entrepreneurial abilities among rural women.
Smt. Mamta Bhupesh, Minister for Women and Child Development, Govt. of Rajasthan appreciated Nand Ghar for its contribution towards the development of the community and also recognized Nand Ghar’s work towards the upliftment of children, women, and the community in the state.
Nand Ghar has 1185 centres spread across 12 districts in Rajasthan that provide best in class facilities to the children and women for their overall growth and development.
The journey of Nand Ghar started in 2015 as a dream project of the Vedanta Chairman, Shri Anil Agarwal. A network of model anganwadis, Nand Ghar provides pre-school education through e-learning, BaLa designs and smart kits. Along with education, children are also provided with nutritious meals and health facilities for their unhindered growth. Nand Ghar also aims to strengthen skill and entrepreneurship among rural women. With the Vision to transform the lives of 8.5 crore children and 2 crore women across 13.7 lakh anganwadis the Nand Ghars are set up in a collaboration with the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development.
With more than 2100 centres, the Nand Ghar project is now spread across 10 states – Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Punjab, Assam, Himanchal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to touch the lives of 4 million community members while directly impacting around 2 lakh children and 1.8 lakh women on an annual basis.
Nand Ghars are equipped with solar panels to ensure 24X7 electricity, water purifiers, clean toilets and smart television sets, and have become a model resource centre for the local communities. Pre-school education is provided to children in the age group of 3-6 years. Nutritious meals and take-home rations are being provided for children, pregnant and lactating women. Primary healthcare services are rendered through mobile health vans & telemedicine facilities and women are empowered through skilling, credit linkage and enterprise development.

Udaipur. With a strong commitment tosupport the health requirements of communities in Rajasthan, Vedanta Group companies, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) and Cairn Oil & Gas, have collectively rolled outseveral initiatives in the field of health. These initiatives are focused on communities with limited or no access to primary healthcare.

“I would like to commend the efforts of Hindustan Zinc for donating the RTPCR Testing lab that we run today. The lab plays an invaluable role in the COVID testing we do. If more contributors like HZL step up in the hour of need, the general public will be further able to receive better health facilities. I would like to thank Hindustan Zinc for proactively coming forward and working for the betterment of the society and community,” said Dr Shalabh Sharma, Principal, Bhilwara Govt. Medical College.
“Cairn has done commendable work during COVID-19 (highly advanced ambulance, protection kit, N95 mask, cotton mask, Philips B-PEP ventilators, hand sanitizer, sodium hypo-chloride, COVID testing VTM kits). High quality and pre-decided standards are set by the company, which is proving to be essential in our war with COVID-19. I hope they continue with their efforts and that the general public can take full advantage of the services,” said Dr BL Mansuriya, Principal Medical Officer, Barmer.
Theefforts under the aegis of Vedanta in Rajasthan are:

1. State-of-the-art facilities and specialists
   HZL has increased access to health facilities by supporting to create state-of-art infrastructure at Heart Hospital, Udaipur to provide affordable health care facilities to heart patients and free treatment to BPL patients. The hospital now has 150 beds, a unit for cardiology along with upgraded facilities in ICU, Cardiology Department and Cardiology Surgery Department. HZL also has its company run hospitals operating in different locations where Primary health care services are provided to employees, their families and nearby community members. In the FY 2020-21, the beneficiary count is approximately1.3 lakh till date.
   To improve medical facilities at the district hospital of Barmer, Cairn initiated two major interventions – a campaign, ‘Green Barmer, Clean Barmer’ to create awareness on health and hygiene; and strengthening the health services offered at government district hospital by providing three medical specialists. The specialists include a female gynaecologist, an ENT specialist, and a general surgeon. So far, more than 45,500 OPDs and 3,246 surgeries & institutional deliveries have been done by Cairn supported doctors in the district hospital.
2. Smile on wheels
   HZL has partnered with Smile Foundation to support the healthcare of people in the villages at Zawar Mines, Agucha Mines and ChanderiyaSmelter in Rajasthan through the Smile on Wheels programme. The Mobile Health Van is equipped with a team of qualified doctors, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists, drivers and a group of volunteers. HZL runs four MHVs, which covers 83 villages across three locations in Rajasthan. Primary healthcare has been availed for a total of more than 30640 times by beneficiaries through OPD services have been availed from these MHVs. Awareness sessions are conducted on importance of balanced diet, respiratory system covering, Global Hand Wash Day and World Aids Day. Point-of-care tests mainly for Random Blood Sugar Test and Hemoglobin test have also been conducted for 1341 people.
3. Mobile Health Vans (MHVs)
   Mobile Health Vans are aimed at providing affordable, accessible, reliable and quality preventive healthcare services to the people at their doorstep. MHVs by Cairn have delivered services across 149 villages in Rajasthan. Over the last one year, more than 1,14,654 community members have benefited from the OPD services by these MHVs. Regular multi-specialty health camps are also conducted, where services of a gynaecologist, an orthopaedic, a paediatrician, an ENT specialist, a dentist, and a general practitioner are provided, benefitting over 1,500 people.
4. Fighting the pandemic
   HZL has provided over 1 lac dry rations and 1.5 lac ready-to-eat meal packets. 180 villages have been sanitised at regular intervals. 144 villages were covered with OPD services, maintaining COVID guidelines. 336 OPD sessions were conducted during this period. Around 1 lac PPE kits were given to district administration. HZL also engaged its business partners to come in the fore-front and help by providing relief packets. An initiative ApniRasoi’ was started by Sakhi women, where cooked meals were prepared by the SHGs and provided to migrant labourers and needy families. This initiative was done in partnership with the Azim Premji Foundation. The Sakhi women and ladies club women have also volunteered to stitch cloth masks during the pandemic. In addition, an RT-PCR machine for conducting COVID tests was provided by HZL to Medical College of Bhilwara.
   Cairn Oil & Gas stands by the communities and has mobilised all its on-ground efforts to ensure thatthe nation wins its battle against COVID-19. Three quarantine centres have been set up, along with distribution of 59,500 masks, 1,550 PPE suits, 31,000 sanitizers, 12,000 surgical gloves, 1,300 N95 masks to the district hospitals. 10 portable lab kits were also given for diagnosing the impact of COVID-19 on critical patients. Regular fumigation of the district hospital, labour colonies &marketplaces has also been going on. Recently, Cairn also started providing vaccination to its employees, in collaboration with the District Hospital.
5. Diverse community welfare initiatives
   o In order to improve the health condition of children and add nutritional value to their food, the concept of kitchen garden has been established in Anganwadis and Nandghars.
   o A van was provided by HZL to District Chief Medical Health Office, Udaipur in order to help in distributing vaccination to different areas of Udaipur after the Govt announced and launched the COVID -19 vaccination campaign in the district.
   o With an aim to transform public health systems and achieve greater adoption of safe, timely, and effective practices in handling pregnancy and new-born complications, Cairn, in partnership with National Health Mission and Department of Medical, Health, and Family Welfare Rajasthan, has initiated an intervention to operationalize all dysfunctional First Referral Units (FRUs) in Barmer district of Rajasthan. In the financial year 2019-2020, close to 8,586 treatments were conducted by two FRUs supported by Cairn.
6. HZL sets up India’s first Underground First Aid and Ambulance centre
   HZL’s Rampura Agucha Mine has developed India’s first underground First Aid & Ambulance centre. The underground first aid station and ambulance centre is equipped with a fresh airbase dedicatedly for underground mine, where a rescue team along with a medical practitioner has been appointed under charge of a qualified Medical Professional & Rescue Head.This first-of-its-kind below the ground rescue and aid system is functional 24 hours at the underground station along with its dedicated rescue and paramedical staff. The underground mine station also has a dedicated emergency vehicle, equipped with AED, ECG and Reviving Apparatus. The facility is also installed with a resting Air-Conditioned facility armed with portable Oxygen Cylinders & Saline bottles, BP Monitoring Instrument, Dehydration measuring instrument & Pulse oximeter which can be used in case of any emergencies.
7. Cairn Pink City Half Marathon, Jaipur, Rajasthan
   The 5th edition of Cairn Pink City Virtual Half Marathon (CPCHM) was aimed at spreading awareness about COVID-19. It was a record-breaking virtual marathon, which saw registration of more than 40,195 participants from across 23 countries. The week-long event was launched on 13th December virtually By Ms Priya Agarwal, Non-Executive Director, Vedanta Ltd., supporting the importance of using face masks, in alignment with the Government of Rajasthan’s campaign – ‘No Mask, No Entry’ and ‘Mask Hi Vaccine Hai’. CPCHM had 4 categories – 2km, 5km 10km and 21km, and saw participation of government administrations, police departments, BSF & Armed forces, NCC cadets, running groups, corporates, youth clubs, Nehru Yuva Mandalas, SHGs, farmers clubs and students. Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Ashok Gehlot also expressed his support towards the initiative.

March 10, 2021: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Union Minister Women and Child Development & Textiles Smriti Zubin Irani inaugurated Vedanta Nand Ghar’s telemedicine programme – an empowering initiative that will bring healthcare to the doorstep of rural India.

The telemedicine health model will connect MBBS doctors, and specialists including paediatricians and gynaecologists, with community members through extensive use of technology and innovation, as the Government puts the focus on health and well-being in the post-Covid times.
The telemedicine programme will roll out pan-India across the 2,000-plus Nand Ghars over the next 3-4 weeks and offer free medication to community members, providing last-mile connectivity for quality healthcare.
Addressing the company’s employees and partners, Union Minister Smriti Zubin Irani complimented Vedanta for leading change at the grassroots level. “I would like to express my support and gratitude to Vedanta for the CSR activities which are dedicated to the cause of women and children,” Smt. Irani said.
“The fact that Vedanta is dedicating its efforts towards telemedicine today speaks volumes of not only the efforts undertaken thus far in Nand Ghar in terms of conditional infrastructure or educational support given within Anganwadi systems, but also to address the healthcare needs of women and children and communities,” she added.
According to the telemedicine model, envisioned by Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal, each Nand Ghar will hold health camps every fortnight and focus on creating awareness among community members about preventions and change in behaviour to stay healthy. DocOnline, Centre for Health Research and Innovation (CHRI) and Dhanush will partner Vedanta in this project.
