Zinc skills rural youth and links them to sustainable livelihood

350 youth from across 180 villages participate on-ground& Virtually to interact with CEO of Hindustan Zinc Mr. Arun Misra, More than 1700 skilled & trained under the existing program, Over 1400 youth across the nation linked to livelihood through employment & entrepreneurship
Udaipur. Hindustan Zinc, a company that firmly believes in contributing towards the development of the country, came forward to support the Youth of the nation by celebrating ‘International Youth Day’, focusing on the theme ‘Role of Youth in Nation – Building’, in various locations of Rajasthan.

An interactive session was organized between the youth of all the skill development centres and Hindustan Zinc’s CEO, Mr. Arun Misra. He motivated the 350+ youth who participated in the event and had a fun interactive session. The participants asked various questions ranging from guidance on personal life to advise on the professional and career front.
Mr. Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc said, “It was very refreshing to interact with the 350 young minds being trained at our Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Institutes. Out of the 1700 youth trained by us through these institutes, 1400 have already joined different organizations across the country in various capacities and roles. It is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction when our trainees get jobs & become independent and still reach out to us to stay connected & seek guidance from us. These youngsters are brimming with confidence, and after getting equipped with the right skill, knowledge and technology, sky is the limit for them.”
On this occasion, Hindustan Zinc introduceddiverse skill development trainingsthrough its newly launched Skill Development Centre at Chanderiya in partnership with Tata Strive. This project is set to bridge the gap between the youth of our country and the right livelihood opportunities. This centre is one of 2 such centres run by Hindustan Zinc in partnership with TATA Strive and 4 such centres in partnership with Ambuja Foundation. This initiative will help on addressing the root cause of the problem within the youth which is ‘the lack of right skills’.

As a part of the event, various other activities were held across all the Skill Development Centres, wherein more than 350 youths across 180 villages participated through on groundand virtual presence. This project will aim to offer short-duration intensive courses in different sectors like Business Development Executive, Hospital Front Desk Coordinator, Front Office Associate, Assistant Electrician, and Auto Sales Consultant. The capacity of allthe Skill Development Centres is 1250 youth per year.
The Chanderiya Skill Development Centre was inaugurated by Mr. Tarachand Meena – District Collector Chittorgarh, Mr. Rajendra Prasad Goyal Superintendent PoliceChittorgarh,Ms. Anupam Nidhi Head CSR – Hindustan Zinc, C Chandru –COO Smelters Hindustan Zinfc, Ms. Anita Rajan CEO – Tata Strive and VP Tata Community Initiative Trust and Tata Strive Team.
MsAnita Rajan, CEO TATA Strive said, “Hindustan Zinc and Tata Strive together will make efforts for better training of rural youth in skill development.Through this association with Hindustan Zinc, youth will be better prepared for employment opportunities in banking, health, tourism, hospitality, automotive and other sectors.”
Hindustan Zinc’s Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (SEDI) were started in Dariba& Agucha in 2019-20 with an aim to offer short-duration intensive courses in different trades like Assistant Electrician, Microfinance executive, Unarmed Security Guard, General Duty Assistant, Retail Sales Executive, etc. The centre helps and prepares the youth for entering into the job market and self-employment opportunities which will later make a concrete & positive difference in their lives.
Four new skill development centres have been initiated by the company at Kayad, Debari, and Chanderiya in Rajasthan, and at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand. As of now, more than 1,700 youths have been trained through these skilling centres and more than 1,400 youths have been employed in different organizations of their respective fields. Some have already started their own business. These skilling centres provide a very enriching experience to the enrolled trainees, in terms of technical knowledge of their respective fields. Additionally, trainees are also schooled in English, Computers, and Lifeskills with company exposure visits, on-the-job training, guest lecture, projects, etc.


Zinc commits to alignment with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

Pledges to set the climate targets in line with limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C.(Business Ambition for 1.5 C campaign- SBTi), The company recently launched its first Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Report based on TCFD recommendations and guidance.

Hindustan Zinc has Committed to set the long term target to reach Net Zero emission by 2050 in line with Business Ambition for 1.5 C campaign led by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).”
On committing to Business Ambition for 1.5°C Campaign, Mr. Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zincadds, “Sustainability has always been the most prominent vision of Hindustan Zinc. The consequences occurring globally due to climatic change demonstrate that our Earth is very vulnerable to global warming. It’s time that we should do our part to control and limit the global temperature rise. 1.5°C is #OurOnlyFuture and being a responsible corporate, we have set a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. We have committed to the ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ campaign to set a net-zero target in line with a 1.5°C future., which is led by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Earlier this year, Hindustan Zinc was awarded the Most Sustainable Company in the Mining Industry by World Finance at their Sustainability Awards 2021. As a COP26 Business Leader, the company has always been actively initiating towards tackling the repercussions of climate change. The company is also among the only two mining companies globally and among only four Indian companies to be a part of the coveted CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) ‘A List’ 2020. Hindustan Zinc has set Sustainability Development Goals 2025 for themselves where company is aiming towards 0.5 mn tCO2e GHG emission savings in their operations from the base year 2017 as part of their climate risk mitigation efforts.
Hindustan Zinc hasalso signed MoUs with Epiroc and Normet to bring Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in underground mining. This initiative is the first of its kind in India in the mining sector. that will help in reducing carbon emissions, enabling the mine operations to become more environmentally friendly.
Epitomizing towards smart, secure, and sustainable operations, the company has launched its first TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related financial disclosure) report which sets the adoption of TCFD framework for climate change risk and opportunity disclosure.
The ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ campaign is backed by a global coalition of UN leaders, business organizations, and NGOs. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which leads the campaign, drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling companies to set science-based emission reduction targets. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aims at joining a growing group of leading companies that are demonstrating the highest level of ambition on climate and paving the way to a net-zero future. Hindustan Zinc and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) together will aid in limiting the global warming rise to 1.5°C.


Hind Zinc wins CII National Award for Environmental Best Practices 2021

Epitomizing to the company’s vision of ‘Protecting and enhancing biodiversity for a sustainable future’, Hindustan Zinc has won the ‘Most Innovative Environmental ProjectAward’for its Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS) – Restoration of Jarofix Yard and‘Innovative Environmental Project Award’ for Biodiversity Park at Rajpura Dariba Mine -in therenowned CII National Award for Environmental Best Practices 2021.

Commenting on the accomplish ment, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, Mr. Arun Misra, said, “We at Hindustan Zinc strongly believe that our commitment to sustainability will lead us to a healthier and greener tomorrow not just for ourselves but also for future generations. As a responsible corporate, we have put before ourselves rigorous and ambitious Sustainability Development Goals 2025 and each step we take is directed to achieving them. Over 10 hectares of land withinthe Rajpura Dariba Minehas been developed as Biodiversity Park, wherein more than50,000 plants of 42 different species were planted. Earlier the entire area was covered with invasive species, after soil enrichment and conditioning, the area has now been converted into a green land. The Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter team in collaboration with TERI (The Energy and Research Institute) has used Mycorrhiza technology for the development of 3-hectareGreen area on its exhausted Jarofix Waste yard. The Mycorrhiza technology is a symbiotic association between a plant and a fungus, where the plant provides food for the fungus and the fungus draws nutrients from the soil and adds to the improvement of cultivation processes, rejuvenation of fertile soils, and reclamation of wasteland into productive land in a sustainable manner.
Among all the 196 Projects that had applied, the Restoration of Jarofix Yard Project and the Biodiversity Park Project were shortlisted in the 35 Environment Best Practice Projects.Tarun Meghwal- Sr. Manager Environment, Vijay Rana- Manager Process, Manisha Bhati – Deputy Manager Environment and Harish Chaturvedi– Executive Environment from the Chanderiya team and Vivek Kumar – Head Environment DSC and Himanshu Sharda – Team Member Environment RDM teampresented the project to jury members of esteemed Industry professional and received huge appreciation for the project and its implementation by the Jury Team.
This achievement is truly an honour for the entire Hindustan Zinc team for their commitment to the conservation of biodiversity. With this success, the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter team and Rajpura Dariba Minesteam have created a benchmark project for the Mining and Metal industries.


Hind Zinc organizes cattle health camps under SAMADHAN

The project has also been encouraging women farmers to come to the forefront of the field.
Udaipur. Hindustan Zinc on their quest to uplift communities around them,organised cattle health camps across 5 districts in Rajasthan throughout the month of July. Through their flagship project, SAMADHAN, they are aiming to improve the income of farmers and livestock rearers through sustainable farm based livelihood interventions. More than 35,800 cattle of over 3400 livestock owners including women farmers benefited from this drive.

With this project, Hindustan Zinc provides farmers with the right technical training and know-how to enhance their livelihood. The camp provided services for deworming, vaccination, artificial insemination (AI) as well as treatment for diseases related to monsoon season for livestock.

Appreciated the efforts of Hindustan Zinc in the field of livestock development, “Hindustan Zinc has reached even the last frontier of the community to spread awareness regarding best practices in livestock development and animal welfare through these cattle health camps. Through this initiative, they have also worked on artificial insemination for breed improvement in livestock.”
Community Development at Hindustan Zinc includes health and wellbeing of not just local communities, but also extends to their sources of livelihood – their farms and livestock. Through SAMADHAN project, best scientific practices have been combined with technology along with inputs from domain experts to enhance the productivity of existing farm-based resources owned by 20000 farmers and livestock rearers. The cattle health camps ensure preventive and curative health, along with an increase in milk production capacity of cattle and breed improvement of livestock. The company’s aim is to make India better and to achieve that goal they want to empower the backbone of our country with their resources and expertise at every step possible.
SAMADHAN provides more than just cattle health camps and regular awareness sessions. They have designed a multi-prong approach that helped them reach out to more than 11, 500 families. They ensure the availability of fresh and high nutrition feed for cattle, providing 24/7 veterinarian services.
The intervention specializes in providing multiple types of services that are designed to meet the geographical requirement as well as region specific requirement of the beneficiaries. It also brings in global benchmark scientific practices to improve livestock productivity.
Through the farm based sustainable livelihood intervention, the organization has introduced sorted semen for female progeny in cows whose average milk production capacity is 1.5 times more as compared to average cows. Similarly, the organization has also introduced goat AI services. SAMADHAN project is implemented by Hindustan Zinc in technical partnership with BISLD.


Hind Zinc in partnership for modular Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

Hindustan Zinc will become the first mining company in India to introduce utility electric vehicles in underground mines
Udaipur : In a pioneering move to decarbonise Indian Mining, Hindustan Zinc today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Finnish technology firm Normet Group Oy to introduce battery-powered service equipment and utility vehicle in underground mining. Taking a step closer to achieving carbon neutrality, Hindustan Zinc is set to introduce Normet SmartDrive Vehicles (NSDVs) in their underground mines, enabling the mine operations to become more environment friendly and sustainable.

This is the first of its kind initiative that has been taken up in India in the mining sector. HZL is the leader in deploying transformational and sustainable technology in mining. It has taken another decisive step for their sustainable and smart operations in an operational field dominated by legacy technologies.This partnership is a testament to the focus of Hindustan Zinc on driving the green economy by reiterating its commitment to environmental solutions. It will help HZL achieve its Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) of 0.5mn tCO2e reduction by 2025 by attaining zero noise pollution, zero harm to the environment and zero carbon emission.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) makes Hindustan Zinc become the first mining company in India to deploy Battery Electric Utility Vehicles in underground mining.
Sustainable development is an integral part of Hindustan Zinc’s business philosophy and the company’s COO Mines, Mr Praveen Sharma emphasised that thispartnership with Normet will furtherits efforts towards responsible mining and that the company is thrilled to introduce India’s first battery electric utility vehicles in underground mines on the road towards a greener future.
The Normet SmartDrive EV will significantly help HZL in saving a huge amount in HSD (High Speed Diesel) and its maintenance. For instance, a Normet machine consumes 15-17 litres of HSD per hour. The average life cycle for these vehicles operated on HSD are 20,000 hours. By substituting these HSD vehicles with Normet SmartDrive battery operated vehicles, around 3 lakh litres of High Speed Diesel can be saved per vehicle. In total, by substituting 3 SmartDrive EV’s for HSD vehicles, almost 10 lakh litres of fuel can be saved.
In the first phase of the partnership, Hindustan Zinc will deploy three of Normet SmartDrive EV’s – a Spraymec, an Agitator, and a Charmec in their underground mines.
Normet SmartDrive is a modular Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) architecture designed to optimize energy consumption and performance in underground mining and tunnelling applications. The SmartDrive equipment enable higher productivity, lower operating costs and most importantly – zero local emissions. Built-in energy recuperation technology maximizes the storing of regenerative braking energy during downhill driving and deacceleration of SmartDrive equipment. In addition, efficient hydraulic dual-circuit oil immersed brakes provide additional braking power when it is needed.
Earlier this year, Hindustan Zinc had also signed an MoU with Epiroc Rock Drills AB to introduce frontline fleet of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) in their underground mines.
